Groups or No Groups...That is the Question!

I went to show Lauren my room today, and we decided to play around with the desks. I pretty much hate having desks in long straight rows (just a personal preference), so I wanted to try to mix it up a bit. This is what we came up with....

There are positives and negatives to having students in groups (as there are with any configuration). I know I'll have to meet my kids and see each class's dynamic before truly deciding what works, but should I leave it like this for the beginning of the year at least? What do you think? Yay or nay? Please take your votes below! Thanks!

AAAAUUUGGGGHHHH! I HATE groups for the first weeks of school. I always put them in rows in alphabetical order so I can memorize their names. They stay that way for at least two weeks. In groups they're facing each other, which is good when you want them to have discussions and whatnot, but bad when you need their attention and they're playing footsie and making eyes at the new kid instead of listening to you. The first little bit of school is a lot of instruction about how the ship is run, and I want all eyes on the captain when I ask the first time, you know what I mean?

Oh, and I'm sorry that you don't have desks that are all in the same style. That would really bug me.
